Last February 6, the researcher of the Housing Chair Gemma Caballé Fabra achieved the international PhD, with an Excellent Cum Laude, with the defense of her doctoral thesis “La intermediación inmobiliaria ante los nuevos retos de la vivienda” (Real estate brokerage in the face of new housing challenges). Dr. Carlos Lasarte, Dr. Pedro Antonio Munar and Dr. Christoph Schmid were the members of the Examination Board.

Last January 23, the researcher of the Housing Chair Núria Lambea achieved the international PhD, with an Excellent Cum Laude, with the defence of her doctoral thesis “Propuesta de un modelo de provisión y gestión de vivienda social en clave europea” (Proposal for a social housing management model in a European context). Dr. E. Muñiz, Dr. J. Tejedor and Dr. M. Elsinga were the members of the Examination Board.

On June 19, Maridalia Rodríguez Padilla defended at the University of Barcelona (UB) her PhD thesis with the title “Foreign investment through the real estate trust to mitigate the housing deficit in the Dominican Republic”. Its directors were Dr. Georgina Garriga Suau and Dr. Sergio Nasarre Aznar. It has been evaluated by the professors Dr. Jordi Bonet Pérez (University of Barcelona), Dr. Estela Rivas Nieto (Universitat Rovira i Virgili) and Dr. Emmanuel Cedeño Brea (OMG Institute).
The PhD thesis promote the design of a legal framework that encourages the development of the Dominican real estate market through the real estate trust with foreign participation, in its different forms of sale, rent, lease with option to purchase and other forms of tenure. With the objective of reducing the housing deficiency that affects the Dominican Republic.

Graduation ceremony for PhDs at the Rovira i Virgili University

On 20th November 2018, a graduation ceremony for the new PhDs (class 2017/2018) was held at the University Rovira i Virgili. Dr. Elga Molina and Dr. Rosa M. Garcia, both researchers from the UNESCO Housing Chair, graduated this year, and defended respectively the following PhD thesis: “Una nueva regulación para los arrendamientos de vivienda en un contexto europeo” [A new legal framework for tenancies for residential purposes in a European context] and “La sustitución de la renta por la rehabilitación o reforma la vivienda en los arrendamientos urbanos” [Renovations in lieu of rent in urban leases]. Both dissertations were supervised by Prof. Dr. Sergio Nasarre.

Research stay in the University of Birmingham

Núria Lambea, PhD candidate in the UNESCO Housing Chair, has undertaken this summer a three-month research stay (June-September) in the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom), within the scope of her PhD on social housing management schemes. In particular, she has been within the Housing and Communities Research Group (School of Social Policy), leaded by Prof. David Mullins. There, she has focused on doing an in-depth study on the social housing system, legislation and policies in England in general and on the housing associations and their management model in particular. Moreover, the research has been enriched by a Programme undertaken with Accord housing association.
