Presentations on evictions and homelessness in the IV Seminar of housing of the Consell Insular de Menorca

Drs. Sergio Nasarre and Jan Gonzalo and Mr. Isidre Monreal participated on November 9th in the IV Seminar of Housing of the Consell Insular de Menorca, presenting the reality of housing in Spain today, as well as a preview of the documentary “El Umbral “and of the simulation experience “The Threshold”. The Seminar showed the special difficult situation in which there is access to housing on the island and, in general, in the Balearic Islands, as well as the reality of evictions, especially rental.

 

 

The Chair participates in the event “Southern Catalonia 2040”

The director of the Chair, Dr. Sergio Nasarre, was invited to participate in the event “Catalunya Sud 2040” organized on 8 November by the Chair of the Region of Knowledge of the URV where strategies were discussed with other agents of the territory on the future of our region.

 

 

The UNESCO Housing Chair of University Rovira i Virgili takes part in the drafting of the Urban Agenda of Catalonia.

The Urban Assembly of Catalonia was set up on November 5th, formed by the Generalitat of Catalonia, civil society actors, local governments and observers. Its purpose is to draft a New Urban Agenda following the guidelines of the UN Habitat III, approved in Quito in 2016, that is to say, it aims to promote the environmental and economic sustainability of urban habitats, to guarantee healthy urban areas and the well-being of people, to foster economic prosperity and to accentuate the territorial dimension.

The amendment of the Urban Leases Act

Dr. Elga Molina Roig delivered the conference “The amendment of the Urban Leases Act” last Tuesday, November 30. It was held in the Tarragona Chamber of Urban Property (Cambra de la Propietat Urbana de Tarragona), who organized it jointly with the Tarragona Law Bar (Il·lustre Col·legi d’Advocats de Tarragona) within the Seminar “Practical problems of eviction procedures”. Dr. Molina explained the draft laws that are currently being discussed in the Spanish Parliament as well as other proposals, such as the principles proposed by the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya). Moreover, all the proposals were compared with the regulation of urban leases in other European countries.

UNESCO Housing Chair researchers attended the Course “Ensuring the housing access and security, two collective challenges”

The UNESCO Housing Chair researchers Gemma Caballé and Núria Lambea attended, last Tuesday October 30, the Course “Ensuring the housing access and security, two collective challenges”, held in Barcelona and organised by the Consorci Universitat Internacional Menéndez Pelayo Barcelona (CUIMPB) – Centre Ernest Lluchin cooperation with the Observatori Metropolità de l’Habitatge de Barcelona (Barcelona Metropolitan Observatory on Housing, O-HB). Speakers from both the academic and institutional field (state, regional and local) as well as representatives of private entities and organisations participated in a Course with a numerous attending audience.

Dr. Xerri involved in the reform of urban leases in Malta

Kurt Xerri, a PhD graduate of the Housing Chair, has recently been involved in the drafting and publication of the White Paper on the Regulation of the Private Rented Sector in Malta.  This project was conducted by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Accommodation of the Republic of Malta.

The White Paper entitled “Renting as a Housing Alternative” is the elaboration of the main conclusions of Dr. Xerri’s doctoral thesis, which was presented to the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in April of 2017.  Following the Consultation process, the document will serve as the basis for the enactment of a legislative act regulating private leases in Malta.

Participation in an international workshop

Dr. Héctor Simón took part as a speaker in the “EU Economic Governance and the Charter of Fundamental Rights” Workshop with the topic foreclosures and so-called non-performing loans. The Workshop took place on Friday, October 26th, at the headquarters of Open Society foundations in Brussels, in the framework of a project that aims to analyze the way in which the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union can influence the ordinary functioning of European institutions, like the European Central Bank.

The UNESCO Housing Chair in the Barcelona Meeting Point (BMP) 2018

Gemma Caballé Fabra,  PhD student of the UNESCO Housing Chair,  attended the Barcelona Meeting Point 2018 on October 25 and 26, 2018 to learn about the new trends in real estate sector, especially in the field of “proptech”, which includes topics such as home automation, smartcontracts,  blockchain, online real estate agencies, etc. One of the conclusions from this congress is the growing importance of technology in real estate sector.

On the other hand, Laura Lopez, Director of the Foundation “Mutua de Propietarios” also presented at the same congress the study carried out with the UNESCO Housing Chair on the accessibility of Spanish homes.

At the ENHR coordination committee in Athens

Prof. Sergio Nasarre has participated in the biannual meeting of the Coordination Committee of the European Network for Housing Research (ENHR), the largest network of housing researchers in Europe. The meeting took place in Athens on October 26 and 27, 2018. At the meeting, Prof. Nasarre presented the first proposal of new statutes of the international organization and discussed the details of the international congress to be held in that city in August 2019.
