Attendance to the annual meeting of the Research Project on Abusive Lending Practices of the Open Society Foundations

Dr. Héctor Simón attended the annual meeting of the “Abusive Lending Practices” Project on November 22 and 23 2018, which is coordinated by Open Society Foundations. The convening took place in the city of Lisbon. This project combines strategic litigation, advocacy, empirical research, and legal empowerment to ensure that states protect the human rights of borrowers in possession cases.

Prof. Dr. Sergio Nasarre and Gemma Caballé attended the 8th COAPI Conference of lawyers

On 23th November, Prof.Dr. Sergio Nasarre and the predoctoral researcher Gemma Caballé attended the 8th Conference of lawyers of the General Council of Real Estate Agents Bar (COAPI) that was held in Madrid. The researchers of the Chair were invited to explain the new challenges of the housing sector from a European perspective, as well as the new challenges of the profession of real estate brokerage in Spain.

The Generalitat de Catalunya, through the Council for the Disability of Catalonia (CODISCAT), initiates the process of legislative adaptation to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On November 16th, the opening session of the technical table was held at the headquarters of the Department of Labor, Social Affairs and Families to achieve the adaptation of the Catalan legal system to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability approved by the Organization of the United Nations, on December 13, 2006, ratified by Spain and the European Union.

One of the researchers of the Housing Chair, Andrés Labella, has joined the work team, proposed at the request of the entities Cocemfe Catalunya and Dincat, with the aim of focusing on private law, especially on issues related to the right to independent life and in the community included in article 19 of the Convention and on all aspects related to housing and protection measures, both personal and physical.

In this sense, the main goal will be to offer proposals so that the new ordinance suppresses the outdated terminology and modifies the articles that cause discrimination. As regards the material content of the right to independent life, the implementation into the new civil legislation of the basic elements for the configuration of community environments as a support network so as to fight against social isolation and to boost balance of family life and work, from a gender perspective and sustainability of cities and communities, will be proposed.

Attendance at the I Meeting of the Network Leonardo – BBVA Foundation

Dr. Héctor Simón attended the First Meeting of the Leonardo Network, which brings together those researchers from the different scientific areas who have been awarded a Leonardo grant in the last five years. Dr. Simón was awarded a grant in 2015 to study “The improvement of the reverse mortgage from the European and North American perspective”. The constitution of this network, at the initiative of the BBVA Foundation, aims to give visibility to the research undertaken by the researchers. Presentations on evictions and homelessness in the IV Seminar of housing of the Consell Insular de Menorca

Drs. Sergio Nasarre and Jan Gonzalo and Mr. Isidre Monreal participated on November 9th in the IV Seminar of Housing of the Consell Insular de Menorca, presenting the reality of housing in Spain today, as well as a preview of the documentary “El Umbral “and of the simulation experience “The Threshold”. The Seminar showed the special difficult situation in which there is access to housing on the island and, in general, in the Balearic Islands, as well as the reality of evictions, especially rental.

 

 

Participation in an international workshop

Dr. Héctor Simón took part as a speaker in the “EU Economic Governance and the Charter of Fundamental Rights” Workshop with the topic foreclosures and so-called non-performing loans. The Workshop took place on Friday, October 26th, at the headquarters of Open Society foundations in Brussels, in the framework of a project that aims to analyze the way in which the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union can influence the ordinary functioning of European institutions, like the European Central Bank.

At the ENHR coordination committee in Athens

Prof. Sergio Nasarre has participated in the biannual meeting of the Coordination Committee of the European Network for Housing Research (ENHR), the largest network of housing researchers in Europe. The meeting took place in Athens on October 26 and 27, 2018. At the meeting, Prof. Nasarre presented the first proposal of new statutes of the international organization and discussed the details of the international congress to be held in that city in August 2019.

14th Interdisciplinary Workshop: expropriations, insurance and Human Rights

On the 16th of October, took place the 14th Interdisciplinary Workshop: expropriations, insurance and human rights. Professor Cristina Argelich of the University of Cádiz participated with the presentation “Defects without virtues of the expropriation system of the Autonomous Community: some lessons from England and Wales; Mr. Àlex Mestre, President of the Catalan Council of Chartered Insurance Professionals with the presentation “The banking-insurance operator in home insurance”; and Professor Héctor Simón Moreno of the URV with the presentation “The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the constitutionalization of private law: a new way to protect the right to housing?”.

Participation in an international workshop & Guest lecture property law

Dr. Héctor Simón took part as a speaker in the “EU Economic Governance and the Charter of Fundamental Rights” Workshop with the topic foreclosures and so-called non-performing loans. The Workshop took place on Friday, September 28th, in Galway, Ireland, in the framework of a project that aims to analyze the way in which the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union can influence the ordinary functioning of European institutions, like the European Central Bank. Dr. Simón also delivered a lecture on the systems of property law in Europe within the Master of International Commercial Property Law, organised by the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Training session on urban leases

The UNESCO Housing Chair has organized a training session on urban leases for the Professional Association of Tax Technicians of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands (delegation of Tarragona), on 20 September 2018. Several researchers from the Housing Chair have taken part in the seminar (Prof. Dr. Sergio Nasarre, Dr. Frederic Adan, Dr. Rosa Maria Garcia and Dr. Elga Molina), in which the civil and procedural aspects of urban leases have been addressed.
